Blackwater rivers run dark not because they're dirty, but because they're deep — stained by the land itself, carrying everything that came before. This piece is built around that idea: dark water as a source of life, memory, and identity. A winding river glows turquoise through a moss-draped swamp at night, with a turtle riding the current and gold light scattered along the banks. Part of the word series — wear it, and teach it.

UMPE is an Indigenous Algonquian word for water. Algonquian is one of the three language families — alongside Eastern Siouan and Iroquoian — that flow into the ancestry of many Southeastern Native peoples.

Now, real talk on the Lumbee side: I can't tell you this is a confirmed word in our language, because honestly, so much of it was lost. But there are clues. "Lumbee" comes from the Lumber River, and a lot of people believe that name traces back to an Algonquian root meaning "dark water" — which is exactly what umpe points to. So I'm not claiming it as gospel. I'm sharing it as a thread worth pulling, a piece of a story we're still putting back together. That's kind of the whole point — stay curious, ask the questions, keep the language alive by talking about it.

A Length

Place the end of a measuring tape beside the collar at the top of the garment (high point shoulder). Pull the tape to the bottom of the item.

B Width

Place the end of the tape at the seam under the sleeve and pull the tape measure across the product to the seam under the opposite sleeve.

C Sleeve length

Place one end of the tape at the top of the set-in sleeve, then pull the tape down until you reach the hem of the sleeve.
